SOUTH AFRICAN FOLK SONGS COLLECTION: 24 Traditional Folks Songs for Intermediate Piano Solo
"Introduce piano students to the beautiful traditional music of South Africa with these 24 folk songs arranged for piano solo. During apartheid the music of the country's various cultures and groups (Afrikaans, amaNdebele, amaXhosa, amaZulu, Bapedi, Basotho, Batswana, Cape Malay, emaSwati, Vatsonga) developed separately, and the authors felt it long overdue to bring these contrasting musical traditions together. Titles include: The Axe Cuts the Thorn Tree • The Crowing of the Rooster • The Doves Above • God Bless Africa (Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika) • Here Comes the Alibama • I Have a Sweetheart • Jan Pierewiet • Mama, Who Is This? • Our Dearest Mothers • Sugar Bush • They Say There's a Man in the Moon, and more" - Hal Leonard Publications
Written for violin, flute and percussion.
Performed by the Wet Ink Ensemble at the Open Space New Music Festival in Colorado. 2019
,meditation on tessitura,
focuses on the higher registers of the forces at play here - this work is not a meditation but if listening to it encourages this, by all means!

'Thoughts' was placed First Runner-Up for the University of Cape Town's Cone of Composition Composers competition.

Thoughts,
is characterized in a spatial environment encouraged by the very nature of the wholetone scale. Like our thoughts, this piece ventures into dark and light textures and fluctuates between such textures. The dark textures are enhanced by the density created in the music through the use of the low registers of the piano, the sustaining notes of the horn and cello and the interaction of the violin, viola and percussion. The light textures are enhanced by sparse melodies played by each instrument, as heard in the introduction. The use of poly-rhythms in this work aid the sense of an ongoing line which either slowly dies away or abruptly ends. The ending of the work combines both the dark and light textures which all fade away until the piano is left with its final thought of a single note resolution.
